Life Cycle Assessment
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a systematic approach to evaluating the environmental impact of a product at each stage of its lifecycle, from raw material extraction through production, usage, and disposal.Measuring environmental impact across the product lifecycle
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a structured method for evaluating the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle, from raw material extraction and manufacturing to product use and end of life.
For manufacturers, LCA provides a common framework for understanding environmental impacts, identifying opportunities for improvement and making more informed sustainability decisions.
At Seco, LCA supports product development, helps identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact and provides customers with transparent environmental information to support more informed manufacturing decisions.
What is Life Cycle Assessment?
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) measures the environmental footprint of a product throughout its lifecycle. Rather than focusing on a single stage, LCA considers raw materials, production, transport, product use and end of life to create a more complete picture of environmental impact.
Because manufacturing often involves trade-offs between performance, cost and sustainability, LCA helps companies evaluate different options using a recognized methodology and consistent environmental data.
Why Life Cycle Assessment matters in manufacturing
Life Cycle Assessment provides environmental data that can help manufacturers make better decisions throughout the product lifecycle.
It helps manufacturers:
- Understand the environmental impact of products and processes
- Identify environmental hotspots across materials, production and use
- Evaluate products and processes using consistent environmental data
- Support sustainability reporting and purchasing decisions
- Validate sustainability claims using a recognized methodology
This makes LCA relevant not only to sustainability teams, but also to product managers, operations leaders, procurement teams, customers evaluating different tooling and manufacturing options.
How Seco is implementing LCA
The Life Cycle Assessment program at Seco is being introduced across product groups to provide more detailed environmental information for both internal decision-making and customer applications.
Pilot LCA projects across four production sites have helped develop the methodology, identify environmental hotspots and improve understanding of manufacturing impacts from raw materials through customer delivery (cradle to gate). In one example, Seco combined a cradle-to-gate assessment of a custom drill with real-time machining data collected during customer testing. This enabled the environmental impact of different coolants, cutting parameters, energy consumption and tool life to be evaluated across the machining process, extending the assessment into the use phase.
Together with Seco’s cutting data engine, this approach provides a broader view of environmental performance throughout the tool life cycle (cradle to grave). Seco has also collaborated with a Swedish technical university to improve LCA models for reconditioning and alternative business models.
This work is laying the foundation for providing more detailed environmental information across the product portfolio.
How Life Cycle Assessment supports product development
Life Cycle Assessment helps identify where the greatest environmental impacts occur across materials, production processes and product use. These insights can guide product development, prioritise improvement initiatives and support the development of products with lower environmental impact.
As LCA becomes more integrated into product development, it also provides a recognised methodology for evaluating improvements and supporting progress towards long-term sustainability ambitions.
Life Cycle Assessment for machining and manufacturing
Manufacturers are increasingly being asked to understand and report the carbon footprint and wider environmental impact of the components they produce. LCA can provide valuable insights into how materials, energy consumption, tooling, cutting parameters and other process choices contribute to that impact.
Seco can support customers and partners looking to better understand the environmental footprint of their machining processes and explore how Life Cycle Assessment can be applied on the shop floor.
