By providing separate cutting heads from the shank, only the worn cutting part needs to be replaced, while the shank remains in use. As an example, when comparing a standard 16mm diameter, 4-flute, solid end mill with an equivalent interchangeable head solution (mounted on a reusable shank), the carbide weight is reduced by 73%.
